Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, affecting twenty percent of the American population. Most skin cancers are curable if detected and treated early; however, one individual dies every hour from melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer. This month, the American Academy of Dermatology focuses attention on efforts to educate the public on the prevention of skin cancer and melanoma.

More than 50 million Americans have allergies, and 20 million have asthma. The Allergy and Asthma Foundation, or AAFA, highlights awareness of allergies and asthma as serious and expensive health problems during May, which is the peak season for individuals with these conditions. AAFA sponsors Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, and ongoing educational programs, advocacy, support groups, and research. |

National Headache Awareness Week strives to create awareness of the reality of the pain and suffering related to headaches. The National Headache Foundation educates the public about the causes and treatment of headaches and new medical approaches to their management. |

Everyone who has been diagnosed with cancer is considered a survivor for the rest of his or her life.
